* BEWARE - AVOID AT ALL COSTS * DO NOT RENT FROM MARTIN & CO * I would give them -5 stars if it was possible. The worst and most unprofessional letting agent I have ever dealt with - namely Shanti Bailey and Marie Littleford from Property Management. They are completely clueless about property law and will never ever admit to being in the wrong. Firstly, they refused the notice I gave to end my tenancy and wanted to hold me accountable for rent payments for the foreseeable future. Just to clarify, my tenancy was no longer fixed-term and had been on a periodic tenancy for the past year. I contacted other legal bodies to seek advice and I was well within my rights to serve notice to end my tenancy. No matter how much EVIDENCE I gave them to state that I had every right to give notice, they kept responding with endless lies and false claims. They argued that they could hold me captive in that property for the foreseeable future/rest of my life and that I had no right to leave, ever (anyone come across a tenancy like this before?!), so I would be accountable for rent payments forever. Not only this, Shanti also lied to me on numerous occasions (via telephone and email) stating she was SO CERTAIN I was unable to leave and that she had evidence proving this. Obviously, I never received any evidence at all as it doesn't exist! She later lied and said she never made such claims. Even I though I don't work in property, I know where I stand with my rights based on *FACTUAL EVIDENCE* i.e. not my personal opinion. They eventually decided to accept my notice to end the tenancy (at this point, I had already moved out and returned my keys to the branch - which was accepted funnily enough, despite them refusing the notice I provided a month beforehand). The issues didn't stop there. After this, I wrote a complaint to them several months after moving out regarding the issues I experienced as well as an attempt to obtain a response regarding my deposit repayment request (which I had already requested a repayment for 2+ months ago). As expected, they responded with more lies and false claims. This left me no choice but to submit a statutory declaration claim (which required a lawyer) through the Deposit Protection Scheme in order to get a response from Martin & Co. I finally received my deposit back after almost 8 months since moving out, though this is only as a result of the action I had taken. If I hadn't gone out my way to try retrieve my deposit, it would've still been stuck awaiting their response for who knows how long! I could write so much more regarding their poor service but the word count probably isn't enough to do so... Not to mention the amount of my time they have already wasted. Bottom line - avoid them at all costs unless you want to be faced with a massive headache of endless arguments/problems! Or be held captive in your rented property for the rest of your life for that matter...NegativeProfessionalism
