I moved into a property rented by Martin & Co in October 2020 whilst covid was still at a high. Before agreeing to let I outlined in my contract that the garden needed clearing of the weeds and mattresses as it was incredibly overgrown and a complete mess. Also the property had one bathroom with a bath but no shower, so I had requested a shower to be fitted prior to my tenancy too. This was all agreed to be done before I moved in. The house was unclean but during my viewing I was also assured it would be professionally cleaned before commencing my tenancy. Upon moving into the property, neither requests had been completed, and the state of the house was shocking. Nothing had been cleaned at all, everything was covered in muck and dust. The chimney had not been blocked so sut was all over the living room. The worst thing was a faeces stain in the toilet just the highlight the dire state of the property. I had nothing but problems with the tenancy from here onward. The garden wasnt cleared until 6 weeks after moving in and the shower was not fitted until 10 weeks after moving in. I was given a months refund of rent after much complaining about these issues mutiliple times. Electrical checks had apparently been done and there was paperwork, but must have been by a cowboy tradesman as a socket was hanging off upstairs and not one of the smoke alarms worked. Within two month of moving in the damp in the property started to show through the flakey and poor paint job that had been done to quickly rent the property to an unsuspecting victim like myself. Both bedrooms were riddled with it. Little things like the shower rail coming loose, toilet seat broken, and button on the toilet missing were never sorted in my whole year and a half of tenancy at this property. I actually just bought a new toilet seat as I was sick of waiting for things to be organised. The cherry on the top of this awful experience was that in October 2021 I had organised with the tradesmen who worked for Martin & Co to have access to my property whilst I was away on holiday and fit a new kitchen that the landlord has agreed to so, as this would amend the damp that was showing throughout the kitchen. (DAMP WAS EVERYWHERE) I came home from work on a Monday in September only to find my whole kitchen has been ripped out without my consent and I had no running water or facilities to cook. The most upsetting part for me was knowing my cat had been in all day, and they had done this with him being able to breathe in the dust. As they'd come a month earlier to what we had agreed they had also touched all of my kitchen belongings and piled them up in my living room. When I questioned why at this point they didnt wonder why I had not cleared the cupboards and also still had the cat in the house and my bathroom window open (as if I was on holiday as agreed this wouldn't be the case) the tradesman Ricky said he rang the office and they just told him to go ahead anyway. Rather than anyone ringing me to ask they did not care that it could have been a mistake. The lack of communication has been a common theme throughout my tenancy. I am a single young woman that lives on her own and two men had let themselves into my house without my say so. If I had been off work who knows what situation they could have put me in. I was put into a travelodge for a few days as I requested to be as my property was uninhabitable. I never received a written apology about this from anyone afterwards and yet another situation was dealt with poorly. I am a midwife and I have been to university and rented from some questionable estate agents, but the experience I had with martin & co has been by far the worst. I would not reccomend this estate agency to anyone. Although they sorted things once mistakes were made I just cant understand how so many mistakes were allowed to happen, and how miscommunication for an estate agency of this level is acceptable.
